Dr. Gene Gottfried represents the Moraga-Orinda Fire District’s Division 5 and served as President in 2004.  He serves as the Fire District's liaison member of the Orinda Public Safety Advisory Commission.  He and his wife Phyllis have lived in Orinda since 1981. Gene earned his B.A. and M.D. degrees from Columbia University and is board certified in Internal Medicine and Hematology. His career in academic medicine included faculty positions at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, and UCSF, where he is now Professor Emeritus in the Department of Laboratory Medicine. He was Chief of the Laboratory Medicine Service and Director of Clinical Laboratories at San Francisco General Hospital for 16 years.

Gene is a director of the Rescue One Foundation, which he joined soon after the fire district merger. He also serves as coordinator for Neighborhood Watch/Upper El Toyonal, a disaster-preparedness group that he organized in 1987. As a ham radio operator, Gene was a member of our fire district’s volunteer emergency communications team (the “Com Van”), and he is currently the RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service) Emergency Coordinator for Orinda.  He is also a certified trainer for CERT (Community Emergency Response Team).
