Frequently Asked Questions

1. What causes wildland fires?

There are two basic causes of wildland fires:

  • lightning and,
  • human action. Human action includes intentional and unintentional actions such as fireworks, smoking, model rockets, outdoor cooking, open fires, and the use of a spark producing appliance

2. What factors influence the spread of a wildfire?

Three factors influence the spread of a wildfire. They are topography, weather and fuels. Fuels include vegetation (living and dead) and structures (including roofs, siding, and decks). The only factor that can be modified or improved is fuels.

3. How do I find my address on the map?

By clicking on What is my Wildfire Hazard Rating? at the left side of the screen, the map of the Fire District will appear. You can than click on the “find” icon (binoculars) at the top of the map; this will provide an area to type in your address. By typing in your address and pressing enter, the map will automatically show your property address and your wildland fire hazard evaluation. If you need assistance, please contact the Office of the Fire Marshal at (925) 258-4525.

4. What do the colors mean?

The colors provide a quick visual reference to see the parcel’s wildland fire risk evaluation. A green parcel color indicates a low risk evaluation and as the color, progressively changes to red the risk increases. A red parcel indicates an extreme wildland fire risk evaluation.

5. How do I reduce my risk?

From any page, click on "Improve My Hazard Rating" link. This page will provide you with information that will assist in reducing your wildland fire risk. Once you have made the needed changes and/or improvements, please contact the Fire District, Office of the Fire Marshal at 925-258-4525 to schedule a reassessment of your property. Your improvements may improve your rating, and in any case will increase your fire safety! When your rating improves, your parcel color will be changed on the map.

6. What areas are included in the Wildland Risk Assessment?

The Wildland Risk Assessment study area included all 63.5 square miles of the Moraga-Orinda Fire District (including Orinda, Moraga, and the Community of Canyon and unincorporated portions of the county)

7. I live in the Fire District’s study area and my home was not included in the current evaluations.

Homes built after May 15, 2006 has not been evaluated. Please call 925-258-4525 to schedule a Wildland Fire Risk evaluation and learn how to be Wildland Firewise.

8. How many parcels were identified in the wildland-urban interface?

The entire 63.5 square miles of the Moraga-Orinda Fire District were included as wildland-urban interface. This includes approximately 13,600 parcels.

9. Can defensible space make a difference?

YES! Fire professionals all over the country and members of the Moraga-Orinda Fire District have seen first hand that homes with effective defensible space are much more likely to survive a wildfire.

10. Does defensible space guarantee that my home will survive a wildfire?

It is impossible to guarantee a home will survive a wildfire. By incorporating fuel mitigation strategies and vegetation management techniques, hardening the structure and performing annual maintenance, your homes’ chance of survival is significantly increased.

11. How can I, or my neighborhood, receive more information about the wildfire risk in our community and how I (we) can make a difference in reducing the hazard.

The Moraga-Orinda Fire District Office of the Fire Marshal is available to provide presentations to community groups, homeowner association or neighborhood groups. Individuals are encouraged to contact the Office of the Fire Marshal at 925-258-4525 for more information.

12. Who can access the parcel rating information?

By entering an address in the appropriate location of the website, anyone can access the wildland fire risk evaluation for the address. This site is a public record.

13. What effect will the wildland risk evaluation have on my insurance?

The insurance industry already evaluates areas such as the Moraga-Orinda Fire District for wildland fire. Each insurance company evaluates wildland fire risk using their individual criteria and establishes rates based on their criteria and loss. Because the Fire District used advance technology to collect information and conducts regular surveys of properties, it is our hope that the insurance industry will work with property owners, who reduce their wildland fire risk, and the Fire District, to provide the needed incentive through rate re-evaluations, where appropriate. However, homeowners may find future rates effected by recent wildfires throughout the State of California.

14. Where did the Moraga-Orinda Fire District get the information to determine my hazard rating?

The Moraga-Orinda Fire District used a combination of high technology, specialized imagining collection, on-site assessments, community and fire professionals input for each parcel in the study area.

15. If I make Firewise improvements to my home, how can I get a new rating?

Once the improvements have been completed, contact the Office of the Fire Marshal at 925-258-4525 to schedule a site re-evaluation.
