Each year, Moraga Royale sponsors the Festival of Trees event to benefit Rescue One, a non-profit organization dedicated to the Moraga-Orinda Fire District and emergency medical services in the Moraga and Orinda area. The trees are provided by Moraga Royale and decorated by local businesses, organizations and residents. The themed trees and accompanying gift packages were purchased through a silent auction that ended on December 15, 2011.

"The Rescue One Foundation has been an invaluable benefit to the District and has donated funds for the District to purchase life-saving equipment for use by our firefighters" Said MOFD Fire Chief Randall Bradley, "and support of the community and organizations like Moraga Royale helps Rescue One continue their good works."

In the past year, the Rescue One Foundation donated the funds for the District to purchase a new Lucas 2 Chest Compression Device used in administering CPR and a LifePack 15 Defibrillator. Both of these devices are carried on the District's advanced life support ambulances.

The Moraga-Orinda Fire District would like to thank Moraga Royale and our community for their continued support of the Rescue One Foundation.

The thirteen member Council's primary
function is to oversee the Association's codes and standards development
activities and the regulations governing Committee projects. The
Council also ensures that due process and fairness are upheld throughout
the creation or revision of all NFPA codes and standards.

Bradley holds a Master's Degree from the University of Southern
California and has completed the Executive Fire Officer's program at the
National Fire Academy. For the past ten years Chief Bradley has chaired

areas with limited fire protection services.

NFPA was
established in 1896 and their primary mission is to reduce the worldwide
burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing
and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training, and
education. The world's leading advocate of fire prevention and an
authoritative source on public safety, NFPA develops, publishes, and
disseminates more than 300 consensus codes and standards intended to
minimize the possibility and effects of fire and other risks. NFPA

The existing fire station, which is over sixty years old, needs to be rebuilt because it does not meet seismic standards, modern fire apparatus does not fit in the apparatus bays, and the living area does not adequately accommodate mixed gender staffing. The old station will be torn down and a new station will be built in its place.

“The District is interested in the public’s input relating to this project,” said Fire Chief Randall Bradley, “We will be holding several public meetings during the course of the project to provide information and receive comments about the design of the station.”

The first of these meetings will be held on November 17, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at 20 Via Las Cruces (Station 43) in Orinda. The purpose of the open house is to allow the neighborhood and the community to view the existing station, discuss the planning process, and meet the Fire Chief, his reconstruction team and the project architects. Additional community meetings will be held and the public will be welcome to participate.
Firefighters arriving on scene found a single vehicle, which had struck a tree, trapping two of the occupants. Firefighters quickly determined that there were four people who were injured; three critically. Firefighters used the “Jaws-of-Life” to remove the two trapped victims. 14 firefighters from MOFD and paramedics from AMR responded. The victims were transported to a local trauma center in two MOFD paramedic ambulances and one AMR paramedic ambulance.

Division Chief Stephen Healy noted that seatbelts save lives. “Fatality rates involving motor vehicle accidents in the U.S. have dropped from 5% in 1969 to 1% in 2009, due to a number of factors; primarily the mandatory federal government laws requiring the use of seatbelts and vehicle safety improvements,” Healy said. “Still, over 33,000 people died in motor vehicle accidents in the U.S. in 2009, so there’s still work to be done.”
