Bear Ridge Fuels Reduction Project in North Orinda

Posted: 06-Mar-2018 The Bear Ridge Homeowners Association received cost share funding from Diablo Fire Safe Council for a project to thin and remove hazardous vegetation behind homes. The project is located in the large open space owned by the Bear Ridge HOA, where a MOFD fire trail connects the top of Bear Ridge Road and Tappan Lane to Bear Creek Road. The project to reduce wildfire risk in North Orinda was in cooperation with the Bear Ridge HOA, CalFire, Diablo Fire Safe Council, East Bay Municipal Utilities District (EBMUD) and MOFD. After an all clear from the biological review, the CalFire conservation crews were brought in.  Over 3 weeks the crews removed or thinned combustible overgrown vegetation, removed dead trees and “limbed” up healthy trees to prevent fire spread. The vegetation was then chipped and broadcast back to compost, for weed control and prevent erosion. This project is a great example of a cooperative effort with public, private agencies and homeowners to reduce risk of wildfire in Orinda!
