MORAGA - The Moraga-Orinda Fire District (MOFD) has received notification that its Insurance Services Office (ISO) Public Protection Classification (PPC) has improved from “3” to “2”.  The change will take effect on April 1, 2017.

The District’s ISO PPC had been a “3” since the District formed in 1997.

The PPC for unincorporated areas (outside the City and Town) with no hydrants is now “2X” rather than “9”.

According to the ISO, the PPC is a valuable benchmark for fire districts, and plays an important role in the underwriting process at insurance companies.  Most U.S. insurers use the PPC when determining coverage and prices for policies.  PPC’s range from 1 to 10, with 1 being the best.

Fire Chief Stephen Healy said, “This is a big accomplishment for the District.  This will mean lower insurance rates for some homeowners and businesses.”  Healy noted that individual insurance companies may use the PPC differently and that homeowners and businesses should contact their agent to inquire.

“This is something the public needs to know…about how good their fire district really is…,” said MOFD Board President Steve Anderson.  “Before the District was formed, Orinda’s ISO rating was a 4 – now it’s a 2”

According to the ISO, only 2.8% of fire service agencies nationwide have a PPC of “2” or better.
