Issued: July 6, 2026

The Town of Moraga, the City of Orinda, and the Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District (MOFD) are informing residents that prescribed fire operations are planned at the east end of Orinda Oaks Park and along the ridge trail at Mulholland Ridge Open Space as part of ongoing wildfire risk reduction efforts.

MOFD crews will conduct a prescribed burn to establish and maintain a strategic fuel break. This fuel break is an important wildfire mitigation tool that helps improve evacuation routes, provides safer working conditions for firefighters during wildfire incidents, and supports the long-term health of native grassland ecosystems.

Burning will take place during the cooler morning hours, with crews treating an area approximately 100 feet wide along the roadway. Daily operations are expected to conclude by 1:00 p.m.

MOFD is coordinating closely with the Town of Moraga, the City of Orinda, and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to ensure the project is conducted safely while minimizing impacts on the surrounding community.

Residents in the area, especially those along Donald Drive and in the Rheem Valley neighborhood, may see smoke and fire activity during operations. As a precaution, residents are encouraged to keep windows and doors closed while burning is underway. Motorists traveling on Moraga Road and Moraga Way may also notice smoke in the area.

If weather or fuel conditions become unfavorable, the prescribed burn will be postponed.

Project updates and additional information will be posted on MOFD’s Facebook page, and the Town of Moraga and City of Orinda's social media channels.
