Citizens of the Moraga Orinda Fire District,
As we are entering fall, I would like to take a minute to remind everyone that our peak fire season is starting. Remain vigilant and be prepared for red flag days and diablo wind events. It has been a long hot summer, and the vegetation is extremely dry and susceptible to any spark or ignition source. The deadline to prepare your property for the fire season was June 1st, so your property should already be cleared of hazardous vegetation and combustible material. For those of you still working to remove your hazardous vegetation, review these important safety reminders BEFORE you begin working:
- Did you know that cutting long grass with a lawnmower can spark a fire? Use a weed eater instead to avoid this risk.
- Annual grasses must be removed or cut to less than 3 inches.
- Avoid mowing near rocks, as a metal blade striking a rock could spark a fire.
- Mow before 10 a.m. when humidity is higher and temperatures are lower, and never when it's windy, hot or during a red flag warning.
- Have a fire extinguisher or shovel nearby in case a fire is accidentally started.
