Message from the Fire Marshal - January 2022

Post Date:01/07/2022 10:10 AM

Citizens of the Moraga-Orinda Fire District,

Our hearts go out to the hundreds of residents in Colorado who lost their homes to wildfires over the holidays. It is a sad reminder that we need to remain vigilant to protect ourselves from the risk of wildfires.  The threat of Wildfire is becoming year-round.  Take the steps needed to plan and increase your home's likelihood of surviving when a wildfire occurs.

Have you:

  • Cleaned your roof, gutters, and decks. Remove the accumulation of fallen leaves, needles, and other flammable materials.
  • When removing hazardous vegetation and combustible material, remember to start with the home (structure) and work outwards.
  • Protect your home and property by minimizing the hazardous vegetation in the home ignition zone.
  • Cover all vent openings with 1/16-inch to 1/8-inch non-combustible corrosion-resistant metal mesh screen.
  • Consider installing non-combustible gutter covers to prevent the accumulation of leaves and debris.
  • Fire Safety is not just for your home but also your place of business
  • Do your smoke detectors work?
  • Do you have a fire extinguisher in your home or business?
  • Do you have an evacuation plan in case there is a fire in your home or business?
  • Is your address visible from the street? Will we be able to find you?

Remember, it is your responsibility to protect your home and property from wildfire. Taking practical steps to prepare your home will help us defend your property from a wildfire. Taking action to prepare for wildfire is not a one-time effort. Protecting and preparing your home requires ONGOING maintenance.

Give your home, family, and community the best chance of surviving a wildfire.
