Public Service Announcement -
Fireworks are illegal/Open Burning is prohibited
Issued: June 28, 2022
Citizens of the Moraga-Orinda Fire District,
The Fourth of July holiday is almost here. I wanted to remind everyone to be Fire Safe and have a safe and fun holiday weekend.
- Please remember that Fireworks are illegal in Contra Costa County. This includes safe and sane fireworks. An average of 18,000 fires are caused each year due to fireworks in the United States. Don’t spark a wildfire this 4th of July!
- Charcoal burners (charcoal BBQs) and other open-flame cooking devices shall not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet (3048mm) of combustible construction (gas BBQ, open flame burners, and cooking devices are acceptable). Make sure you remove combustible material and hazardous vegetation from and around your BBQs, open flame burners, and other cooking devices.
- A Burn Ban is in effect. Open Burning is prohibited on all lands within the jurisdiction of the MOFD. Any person who fails to comply may be subject to a fine of $500.00 per day of violation. For purposes of this section:
The prohibition on Open Burning applies to (as defined in the 2019 California Fire Code):
- Open Burning
- Campfires
- Bonfires
- Portable Outdoor Fireplaces
- Ceremonial Fires and Recreational Fires
The prohibition does not apply to:
- UL or ASMI listed manufactured GAS (LPG or NG) outdoor flame devices, such as Gas BBQs or Gas Fire-pits that comply with the Fire Code or
- Campfires on private lands, with a MOFD issued fire permit and any additional restrictions as determined by MOFD staff.
