Change Your Clocks. Check Your Batteries!
As you turn your clocks back this weekend, be sure to test your smoke alarms.
Issued: October 31, 2025
Smoke alarms save lives. Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. Fire spreads fast—working smoke alarms give you early warning so you can get outside quickly.
When you change your clocks, take a few minutes to check your smoke alarms and replace batteries if needed. If you hear a chirping sound, that means the battery is low—replace it right away!
Safety Tips
- Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of your home, including the basement.
- Use interconnected smoke alarms—when one sounds, they all sound.
- Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to make sure each alarm works.
- Keep bedroom doors closed while sleeping to slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
- Remember: working smoke alarms are an important part of your home fire escape plan.
