The Moraga-Orinda Fire District has adopted the 2013 edition of the California Fire Code with amendments in MOFD Ordinance 13-01.

California Fire Code requires installation of a fire sprinkler system meeting the standards of NFPA 13D in all new single family homes regardless of size.

MOFD Ordinance 13-01 requires retrofitting existing residential structures with a fire sprinkler system meeting the standards of NFPA 13D under the following conditions:

• Addition/expansion/remodel/renovation to single family dwellings with a total fire area of construction exceeding 50% of the existing fire area of the structure and over 3600 square feet.
• Attached garage square footage is included in the total calculation.
• Existing sprinklers systems must be retrofitted to supply new area of addition/expansion/remodel/renovation.
